Qualification history
Without ever truly being close to earning a spot in the finals, Uganda have provided their fair share of fireworks in African qualifying for the FIFA World Cup™. In the 2002 qualifiers, they drew 4-4 with Guinea in Kampala, a wild match that saw seven goals in the final 35 minutes. Four years later, they beat Mauritius 3-0 at home only to throw that lead away in the second leg, although they ultimately claimed a winner in extra time. In qualifiers for South Africa 2010, they were a surprise package, winning ten points in their group thanks to three home victories. They ended up two points behind Benin and just off of the pace of Germany 2006 finalists Angola on goal difference.

The current crop
An athletic side with power to spare, Uganda are a tough nut to crack at home, and Scotland-born coach Bobby Williamson has brought a consistency to the team that makes them dangerous away as well. A strong run in qualifying for the 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations has The Cranes’ spirits soaring.

The key players
Talismanic Scotland-based player David Obua is the vital cog in the middle of Uganda’s team, while veteran defender Ibrahim Sekagya is the captain of the far-flung team.

Qualification history
Senegal had to negotiate the toughest qualifying draw in their history to finally reach their first FIFA World Cup™ finals. The Lions of Teranga successfully navigated a group that included Morocco, Egypt and Algeria to book their place at 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan. They have struggled under the weight of expectation since then, however, and lost out on finals berths to Togo in 2006 and Algeria in 2010.

FIFA World Cup finals history
Senegal’s FIFA World Cup debut was certainly worth the wait, as they turned out to be one of the revelations of Korea/Japan 2002. Bruno Metsu’s men started their campaign with a shock 1-0 victory over reigning champions France, before drawing 1-1 with Denmark and 3-3 with Uruguay to secure a place in the second round. The Lions of Teranga caused another major upset by beating Sweden 2-1 in the Round of 16, before eventually falling to an Ilhan Manziz golden goal in their quarter-final against Turkey.

The current crop
After a series of internal disputes, Senegal found some much-needed stability in 2009 when they appointed Amara Traore as coach. Traore’s arrival coincided with improved performances on the pitch, no doubt aided by a core of players with extensive top-flight European experience. With a strong forward line, solid defence and a renewed team spirit that has been missing since 2002, Senegal are finally starting to strike fear into their opponents once again. A disappointing campaign at the 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations cost Traore his job, but Senegal are sure to remain a force to reckoned with in qualifying for Brazil 2014.

The key players
The Lions have a formidable strike force, with captain Mamadou Niang and 2010/11 Ligue 1 top scorer Moussa Sow posing a constant threat to opposition defences. They are ably supported by Freiburg striker Papiss Cisse, who holds the record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Bundesliga season. Tricky winger Issiar Dia provides the service for the front men, while at the back, Kader Mangane and Souleymane Diawara form one of the strongest central-defensive partnerships in African football.

Coach: Joseph Koto (caretaker)
Best performance in a FIFA competition: FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan 2002 (Quarter-finals)
Former stars: Jules Bocande, Khalilou Fadiga, El Hadji Diouf
