Qualification history
Gabon’s finest hour in FIFA World Cup™ qualifying came in their maiden campaign, when they overcame Nigeria to deny their more prestigious rivals a place at Italy 1990. Eliminated in the first round ahead of Korea/Japan 2002 and after the group stage four years later, the Panthers finally made headlines again on the road to South Africa 2010. Placed in a tough group alongside Togo, Cameroon and Morocco, they kicked off with a victory in Casablanca and a home success against the Sparrowhawks to take an early lead in the section, only to have their qualification hopes dashed in their two meetings with the Indomitable Lions.

The current crop
2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations co-hosts along with Equatorial Guinea, Gabon have been testing themselves in a series of friendlies since the end of the 2010 edition. The Panthers are anxious to finally step up to a new level, building on the experience amassed under former coach Alain Giresse and present incumbent Gernot Rohr.

The key players
Now in his 30s, Daniel Cousin remains the side’s attacking fulcrum, backed up by the talent of brothers Pierre-Emerik and Willy Aubameyang plus midfielder Eric Mouloungui.

Coach: Gernot Rohr
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Francois Amegasse, Pierre Aubameyang

Qualification history
Burkina Faso have pitted themselves against their continental rivals in six previous FIFA World Cup™ qualifying campaigns without ever reaching the finals. Their South Africa 2010 bid was their most successful, the Stallions topping their second-round group ahead of Tunisia and beating Guinea and Malawi home and away in the following stage, only to be pipped by Côte d’Ivoire following a pair of losses to the Elephants.

The current crop
Since Burkina Faso (which can be translated as "the home of men of integrity") began emphasising the importance of developing young players, results have improved dramatically. Burkina Faso have excelled in youth tournaments both in Africa and on the world stage, while the senior team’s impressive displays on the road to South Africa 2010 and the 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations suggest genuine strides are being made.

The key players
Top scorer in Africa during qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Moumouni Dagano provides the side’s main attacking threat, while Jonathan Pitroipa and Charles Kabore have emerged as leaders in midfield thanks to the experience they have picked up in Europe.

Coach: Paul Put
Best performance in a FIFA competition: FIFA U-17 World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2001 (Third place)
Former stars: Alassane Ouedraogo, Seydou Traore
