Qualification history
Morocco’s FIFA World Cup™ qualifying debut came in the preliminaries for Chile 1962. At the time Africa had no guaranteed berths in the finals, which meant that even after beating their continental opponents, the Atlas Lions had to face a European side in a two-legged play-off. Defeated 4-2 by Spain on that occasion, the Moroccans would enjoy better luck eight years later, when they overcame Tunisia, Nigeria and Sudan in three keenly contested ties to advance to Mexico 1970. In the qualifiers for Germany 1974 they made it all the way to the final round, where they fell to Zaire. A first-round exit followed on the road to Argentina 1978, and in the race for places at Spain 1982 the Moroccans fell at the final hurdle again, this time against Cameroon. Inspired by Aziz Bouderbala, they returned to the world elite at Mexico 1986, 16 years after their first appearance, overcoming Egypt and Libya in a taxing campaign. Following another first-round elimination in the Italy 1990 qualifiers, they clinched a place at USA 1994 and France 1998, which was their last FIFA World Cup appearance to date.
FIFA World Cup finals history
The most memorable of Morocco’s four world-finals campaigns was Mexico 1986, when they became the first African nation to negotiate their way through the first round. That pioneering side was coached by Jose Faria and topped a tough Group F after beating Portugal and securing draws against England and Poland. Their run came to an end with a 1-0 defeat to West Germany in the Round of 16. Their three other appearances all ended in the first round, the cruellest of those exits coming at France 1998, where they beat Scotland in their final game only for Norway to pip them to second place in the group with a shock defeat of Brazil.
The current crop
On the slide in recent years, Morocco are gradually restoring their reputation, thanks in the main to the efforts of their Belgian coach Eric Gerets. The former Marseille man is currently overseeing an impressive bid to qualify for the 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, the Moroccans having missed out on a finals slot in 2010. Leading the way in a group also containing Algeria, Central African Republic and Tanzania, Gerets’ men have collected seven points from four games, their only defeat coming against the Desert Foxes. The Moroccans gained ample revenge in early June when they displayed all their attacking power to swamp the Algerians 4-0.

Qualification history
Côte d’Ivoire had to wait 76 long years for their first appearance at a FIFA World Cup™ finals. Since their last-gasp qualification for Germany 2006, the Elephants have made huge progress and are now firmly established members of the African football elite. Their new-found status was confirmed when they qualified for South Africa 2010 with relative ease.
FIFA World Cup finals history
Côte d’Ivoire have never made it past the group stage of a FIFA World Cup finals, but it is perhaps worth pointing out that the draw has never been particularly kind to them. For their debut appearance in 2006, the Elephants shared Group C with Argentina, Netherlands and Serbia and Montenegro. They finished third in the pool, just as they did in South Africa four years later, when they were drawn alongside Brazil, Portugal and Korea DPR.
The current crop
Côte d’Ivoire are gradually establishing themselves as one of the most feared sides on the international scene. Coach Francois Zahoui has created a vibrant team spirit, and has the luxury of being able to call upon the talents of Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Gervinho. The main concern for the fans, however, is that this hugely gifted generation – the most talented in the country’s history – could pass into the history books without winning a single trophy. The Elephants were runners-up at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, finished fourth in 2008 and reached the quarter-finals in 2010. However, they have so far been unable to match the exploits of the Côte d’Ivoire side that won Africa’s premier competition back in 1992.
The key players
Côte d’Ivoire boast some of the greatest individual talents in Africa. Forwards Drogba and Salomon Kalou are a formidable front pair, while midfield duo Didier Zokora and Yaya Toure perform key ball-winning duties in the middle of the park. Explosive winger Gervinho supplies service from both flanks, with Emmanuel Eboue and Kolo Toure providing a wealth of experience at the back.
