Qualification history
Morocco ended Tunisia’s first FIFA World Cup™ qualifying campaign – the preliminaries for Chile 1962 – by edging a replay after a two-legged tie had failed to separate the north African rivals. History repeated itself eight years later, with the Moroccans prevailing in a one-match play-off to decide which of them would go through to the last phase, the Atlas Lions eventually going on to the world finals for the first time in their history.
In the qualifiers for Germany 1974, Tunisia overcame Egypt in the first round, only to lose to Côte d’Ivoire. The Eagles of Carthage redeemed themselves at the next opportunity, however, exacting revenge on Morocco in a penalty shootout to make their maiden world finals appearance at Argentina 1978. They failed to return to the big stage in their next four attempts, a barren spell ended by successive qualifications for France 1998, Korea/Japan 2002 and Germany 2006. The Tunisians looked all set to keep the run going at South Africa 2010, but after earning a seemingly decisive draw away to Nigeria they lost their final game in Mozambique and fell a point short of qualification.
FIFA World Cup finals history
Tunisia have taken part in the world’s greatest football competition on four occasions, the first and most successful of them coming at Argentina 1978. They became the first African outfit to win a FIFA World Cup finals match when they saw off Mexico 3-1 in their opening match in Group 2, their one and only victory in the competition to date. Defeat to Poland followed and though they earned a creditable 0-0 draw against reigning world champions West Germany, the Tunisians failed to make the next round.
In each of their three subsequent appearances they have drawn one game and lost two. The pattern began at France 1998, where a 1-1 stalemate with Romania followed defeats to England and Colombia. At Korea/Japan 2002 Tunisia’s solitary point came against Belgium and was sandwiched by defeats to Russia and Japan, and in Germany four years later they kicked off with a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia before coming unstuck against Spain and Ukraine.
The current crop
The Eagles of Carthage are in danger of missing out on the CAF Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 20 years. Drawn into a seemingly straightforward five-team qualifying group with Botswana, Togo, Chad and Malawi, Sami Trabelsi’s charges fell to a surprise 1-0 home loss to the Botswanans in their first match. Wins over Chad and Togo came either side of a home draw with Malawi, but were followed by another reverse at the hands of the Zebras, who have already won the section. Tunisia’s only remaining hope of reaching Gabon/Equatorial Guinea 2012 is to finish as one of the best second-placed teams.

Qualification history
Having joined FIFA in 1986, Equatorial Guinea did not take part in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifying match until the Korea/Japan 2002 campaign, losing both legs of their first-round tie. They failed to improve on this record in their attempts to reach Germany 2006, when they suffered defeat at the same preliminary stage, although they did manage a 1-0 home win over opponents Togo before losing the away leg 2-0. South Africa 2010 saw the Nzalang Nacional enter at the second-round phase of qualifying, and after starting off their Group 4 fixtures with a morale-boosting win over Sierra Leone, five consecutive losses rid them of any chance to advance to the finals.
The current crop
Since that disappointment, Equatorial Guinea have lost international friendlies to Cape Verde, Mali and Estonia, as well as – after a 14-month interlude during which they played no matches at all – Morocco. A rebuilding period that began in August 2010 saw former France coach Henri Michel invited to take over the reins in December of that year. The veteran brought some impressive victories in friendly competition before deciding to relinquish his position early in 2012. Brazilian Gilson Paulo will be the man tasked with taking the side through the 2012 CAF African Cup of Nations, of which they are co-hosts.
The key players
Paulo will rely on two Spanish-born Equatoguineans, Ivan Zarandona and Javier Balboa, to take charge of matches in the middle of the park. The former, a 30-year-old central midfielder, has already played in two qualifying matches for his country, while the latter, a 26-year-old attacking midfielder who came through Real Madrid’s youth ranks, emerged during the closing stages of the qualifying process for South Africa 2010.
