Qualification history
Since the adoption of the current FIFA World Cup™ qualification format in the CONMEBOL Zone, Bolivia have never fared better than the seventh place they managed in the Korea/Japan 2002 preliminaries, when they saw their hopes of reaching the finals evaporate in the final few games. The only time they have ever negotiated a qualifying campaign successfully came when they took second place behind Brazil on the road to USA 1994.
FIFA World Cup™ finals history
It may surprise some to know that Bolivia contested two of the first four FIFA World Cup™ finals: Uruguay 1930 and Brazil 1950. However, it was not until their third and final appearance to date, at USA 1994, that they earned their first point, which came in a goalless draw with Korea Republic in their second group game. Their maiden world finals goal arrived in their next match, a 3-1 loss to Spain that sealed their exit from the competition.
The current crop
In November 2010, in the wake of a fourth successive failure to reach the FIFA World Cup finals, Gustavo Quinteros was appointed national team coach in place of Erwin Platini Sanchez, a former squad-mate of his at USA 1994. The 46-year-old ex-defender, who was born in Argentina and is now a naturalised Bolivian, has since overseen a gradual process of renewal, giving more exposure to youngsters such as Jhasmany Campos, Ricardo Pedriel, Alcides Pena and Rudy Cardozo. Unfortunately though the team didn't perform as they would have liked at the Copa America 2011, returning home after the first round without a win.
The key players
The tip of a spine formed by goalkeeper Carlos Arias, defender Ronald Raldes and midfielder Ronald Garcia, striker Marcelo Moreno Martins carries Bolivia’s goal threat. Currently plying his trade with Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk, Martins showed his credentials in the South Africa 2010 qualifying campaign, hitting seven goals to finish the regional preliminaries as the second-highest scorer.

Qualification history
After finishing in last spot in the South American Zone qualifying standings ahead of Germany 2006, Chile completed a remarkable turnaround by claiming second place – just one point behind Brazil – on the road to South Africa 2010, having secured their passage with a game to spare. Their previous best qualifying performance in the current format came prior to France 1998, when La Roja finished fourth.
FIFA World Cup finals history
With eight FIFA World Cups™ under their belts, Chile are level with Paraguay in fourth place on the list of South American nations that have appeared at most editions of the showpiece event. Their best performance to date came when finishing third as host nation in 1962. On five other occasions they have failed to progress from the group phase, while at France 1998 and South Africa 2010 they reached the Round of 16, only to exit at the hands of Brazil on both occasions.
The current crop
On the back of Marcelo Bielsa’s impressive era at the helm, Chile have once again entrusted their head coach’s position to an Argentinian. Claudio Borghi, who took the reins in February 2011, has an in-depth knowledge of the Chilean game having enjoyed success as a player and coach in the country – particularly at Colo Colo. El Bichi’s squad selections have differed little from those of his predecessor, though he appears to be seeking a playing style based more on possession football than El Loco Bielsa's full-throttle approach. The team’s stylish performance at the 2011 Copa America received many plaudits, although they went out surprisingly early to Venezuela in the quarter-finals. Even so, La Roja are clear favourites to find their way to Brazil 2014.
The key players
Forwards Alexis Sanchez and Humberto Suazo, as well as attacking midfielder Matias Fernandez, are the leading men in a squad packed with talent and boasting viable alternatives in each position. Nor must we forget experienced performers such as Claudio Bravo, Pablo Contreras and Jorge Valdivia, or exciting rising stars like Jean Beausejour and Carlos Carmona.
