FIFA World Cup finals history
After impressing on their way to the second round in each of their first two FIFA World Cup appearances, 1994 and 1998, Nigeria have struggled since: going out at the group stage three times while taking just two points from their last eight matches in the finals. A muddled South Africa 2010 campaign under Lars Lagerback did little to bolster Nigeria’s reputation, but Brazil 2014 offers another chance for the Super Eagles to soar.
The current crop
Surely no side on the continent can overlook the track record of the Super Eagles, nor their rich pool of star players in waiting. They have been criticised for not dealing with the pressure on their shoulders sufficiently, but a new generation of players who are the youthful side of 25 have the potential to give the team a new attitude.
The key players
At South Africa 2010, goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama proved himself once again invaluable in net, while AC Milan’s Taye Taiwo offers plenty of firepower from the left back position. Jon Obi Mikel should be the lynchpin in the green-clad midfield, and the attack can call on a range of promising options.
Coach: Stephen Keshi
Best performances in a FIFA competition: FIFA World Cup USA 1994, France 1998 (Round of 16), FIFA U-17 World Cup China 1985, Japan 1993, Korea Republic 2007 (Winners), Olympic Football Tournament Atlanta 1996 (Winners), FIFA U-20 World Cup Saudi Arabia 1989, Netherlands 2005 (Runners-up)
Former stars: Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Rashidi Yekini
Namibia:
Qualification history
Namibia have only been a member of FIFA for the last two decades, and in that time they have struggled in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup™. Despite twice reaching the African championship in that time, the Brave Warriors have yet to push the continent’s glamour sides in the preliminary stage of the world’s showpiece event. In fact, in over 30 qualifying matches since the run-up to USA 94, the southern African side have won just five times before the start of Brazil 2014. They opened and ended the preliminaries for South Africa 2010 well with a late 2-1 victory over Kenya to start and a 4-2 thumping of Zimbabwe to close, but the four losses in between were enough to eliminate them.
The current crop
The Brave Warriors have shown flashes of promise and counter-attacking zeal that will see them enter the Brazil 2014 fray with little to lose and much to gain. They could prove an especially tricky opponent at home in Windhoek.
The key players
Long-time internationals Oliver Risser and Collin Benjamin remain key leadership figures for the team and look to keep a tight ship at the back. South Africa-based Rudolf Bester is the most regular scorer for the side up front.
Coach: Bernard Kaanjuka
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Ricardo Mannetti, Eliphas Shivute
